Pikey Peak Trekking

Pikey Peak Trekking is an original trekking trail to Everest Base Camp used by Late Sir Edmund Hillary and late Tenzing Norgey Sherpa in 1953 for the Everest Expedition. It was a very popular trekking trail before Lukla airstrip came into existence. Nowadays, most of the trekkers prefer to fly to Lukla and trek to Everest Base Camp to avoid longer trails via Jiri which is easily accessible by road from Kathmandu. The entire trail to Pikey Peak is confined to lower part of Solukhumbu. While trekking, one passes through typical Sherpa villages, terraced fields and rhododendron and magnolia forest. En route one can visit Buddhist Gompa, local schools, meet the villagers and experience their culture and traditional lifestyle. The Pikey Danda (ridge) is a most popular vantage point for sunrise and sunset views over the snow capped mountains including Mt. Everest, Makalu and Annapurna on a good weather.
Trekking to Pikey Peak in spring season (March-May) is a great opportunity to see the blooming of rhododendrons, magnolia and wild orchid along the mountain trails. Lukla-Namche bazaar trail always remains crowded during the high season whereas Jiri trail at the lower part of Solukhumbu is without crowd and one can experience wilderness while walking through off-the-beaten areas. On the last day of the trekking we spend overnight at Phaplu and next day morning we fly back from Phaplu to Kathmandu.
